Scott Colburn

Aliquippa, PA

Scott came to Church Army USA's Uncommon Grounds Cafe ministries as part of a “ministry placement” class when he was in seminary, and has made the cafe the center of his ministry the past several years:

Scott helps to host the Church In The Margins, a Saturday-night dinner fellowship with conversation around a theological question in the place of preaching, and small-group prayer. The Church In The Margins is open and free to all, and has become a home to many people who wouldn't go to a typical Sunday church, either because they don't feel welcome or they aren't sure what they believe.

Scott started out at the cafe as a mentee in Trinity School For Ministry's “Mentored Ministry” class, and this past year he was the mentor. He supervised two seminary students' theological reflections about their volunteer service and ministry at the cafe. Through the “Verbatim” reflection tool, he offered them feedback and reflection that let them connect their conversations to Biblical resources so they can integrate their theological training with actual on-the-ground experience.

Scott has co-led a men's Bible study at the county jail for several years, alternating between a video presentation of the Alpha Course (an introduction to Christianity) and group study of chosen passages. Recently he and the former co-leader of the study were able to baptize two “alumni” of the study at a local lake.

Scott is a poet and playwright, and has led writing groups at the cafe. He has also participated in the annual “24 Hour Playwriting Festival.” He shares his poetry most weeks at the Thursday Open Mike Night. He has a heart for the role of the arts in spreading the Gospel and in enriching life by connecting our creativity to God's creation.

Scott has led Bible studies at the cafe, and is currently working on a curriculum for a long-term Old Testament study for the cafe.

Having just stepped down after several years as the cafe's food buyer and closing shift guy, Scott continues to volunteer behind the counter.

Scott has an M.Div., and is available for teaching or pulpit supply.
