Reclaiming our roots

Why Reclaiming our roots?

There have been times of greater disaster, distress, and threat in our nation’s history, but there has never been a time, in living memory, when there has been more confusion, aimlessness and hopelessness.  COVID, race, gender, increased lawlessness, and extremism have all contributed to a loss of common purpose and the consequential loss of hope.  Which end is up?  Where are we going – toward light or darkness?  What does it all mean?  Even if we know the end game, can anything be done to get us there?

The human agency that God has chosen to bring truth and peace to the situation is the church.  The church has lost much of its relevance in our society however, because it has focused on itself rather than on loving its neighbor.

In order to regain relevance, the church needs to get outside of its walls and spend time with people outside of its walls. We need to reignite the great commission. This initiative is our response to this commandment.

This is what Church Army USA’s Reclaiming Our Roots is all about.  It is about equipping the church to reach into its community with the love of Jesus – meeting physical needs and sharing the good news that meets the greatest spiritual need – the need of trusting in Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins.

How does this new initiative work?

By training evangelists to reach the least, the last and the lost and by planting Centers of Ministry (CoM). The Centers of Ministry are places where multiple churches can love their neighbors and reach people with the gospel of Jesus Christ.  A Center of Ministry may have multiple ministries taking place within it, each ministry with its own unique focus.  A Café, safe housing, a food pantry, an addiction recovery program, ministry to elderly, care for the mentally disadvantaged, ministry to the incarcerated, and more.  The CoMs will empower church people who are accustomed to staying inside the walls of their church to getting outside of the walls into their communities.

They are places where people will have an opportunity to learn and practice evangelism.   They are places where we learn to love our neighbors as ourselves.

Church Army USA will also offer training to individuals in churches who have a desire to reach out.  Pastors are usually too busy to add anything new to their ecclesiastical duties.  Trained evangelists will normally be lay people who will become Evangelists in Residence, taking a leadership role in getting their churches outside the walls of the church.  They will be specially called to help their churches become more loving and outreach oriented
